No More Room in Hell 2 Responder Progression

Understand character experience, account experience, Skills, Expert upgrades, Credits, Merits, final extraction, and what permadeath places at risk.

Responder progression in No More Room in Hell 2 has at least two named experience layers: account experience and character experience. The individual Responder also carries a starting Skill, later ability growth, loadout decisions, and permanent-loss risk. Final extraction is the important progression gate because it awards character experience and converts the whole team’s collected Supplies into Credits; early extraction preserves the character but gives no character progression and only a small portion of Credits.

Account layer

Armageddon publishes Account XP multipliers separately from Character XP. Treat account unlocks as a broader layer and read their exact current labels in the 1.0 interface.

Responder layer

A specific character starts with a Skill, gains experience through successful final extraction, and places individual accumulated progress at risk when permadeath applies.

Currency layer

Credits come from mission value and support gear, Skill upgrades, or cosmetics. Merits come from Assignments and can buy selected rewards including the Rescue Beacon.

Start with the character’s existing role

Each Responder has a background and a starting Skill. Before spending Credits or choosing difficult missions, identify what that Skill does for the squad. Build early decisions around that advantage instead of copying a loadout intended for a different starting point.

The campsite supports up to three Responders. Use the slots to distribute risk. A new character can learn an unfamiliar map, a stable character can handle routine Objective runs, and a developed specialist can wait for a coordinated group. This makes the roster a progression tool even before exact Skill combinations are considered.

Do not call Responders “classes” if that hides the individual death stake. The character’s own history and growth are part of the system, and that character can be lost.

Earn character progress at final extraction

The official launch overview distinguishes Early and Final extraction. Final extraction occurs at the mission end and provides character experience plus Credits based on the entire team’s Supplies. This rewards keeping more than one player alive and bringing mission resources through the exit.

Early extraction is a preservation choice. It provides no character progression and only a small portion of Credits. Use it when the existing Responder is more valuable than the probable reward of continuing: severe infection without a cure route, a squad that cannot complete the next task, or an extraction approach that has already collapsed.

Because the public overview does not publish every XP threshold, record the current post-match values and UI labels rather than importing an Early Access level chart. Keep character XP distinct from Account XP in any personal notes.

Understand account-wide progress without merging it

Armageddon 1.0 lists different difficulty multipliers for Account XP and Character XP. Hard and Nightmare increase both, but by different amounts. That is direct evidence that the two progress tracks should not be described as one level.

Use account growth to understand broader unlock availability, then inspect the selected Responder to see what belongs to that character. If a reward survives the loss of one Responder, it is operating differently from the individual Skill path. Exact unlock persistence should be read from the current interface until a complete official table exists.

Higher multipliers do not guarantee faster useful progress. A failed high-difficulty run can lose the character who would have used the experience. Choose a tier where final extraction is repeatable enough to justify the risk.

Upgrade Skills with a defined purpose

Credits can upgrade Skills to Expert level. Spend when the upgrade advances a real role: firearm handling, objective support, survival, or another named function shown in the current UI. Avoid upgrading only because the character has enough currency while the effect does not match the next deployment.

The 1.0 patch added Handgun Reloading, Rifle Reloading, and Shotgun Reloading to the Skill pool and removed Averaging, Guts, and Teddy Bear. These changes make older guides unreliable even when their general advice sounds plausible. Verify the current Skill name, level requirement, ordinary effect, and Expert effect before planning around it.

A complete Skill list should leave an unknown value blank rather than guessing. The developer notes establish pool changes and the Expert-upgrade concept, but not every current number or unlock gate.

Spend Credits and Merits separately

Credits are connected to extracted Supplies and can support equipment, Skill upgrades, and cosmetics. Merits are earned through weekly Assignments. Armageddon introduced four weekly tasks: three award one Merit plus Credits, and an overarching goal awards three Merits, with a Tuesday reset in the published 1.0 rules.

Merits can provide easier access to selected cosmetics and the Rescue Beacon. The beacon is also purchasable with Credits, occupies a loadout slot, and is consumed when it prevents the next applicable loss. Compare its protection with the gear or upgrade you are delaying.

Do not treat a cosmetic purchase as a power requirement. The separate Steam DLC packs are cosmetic, and their outfits or accessory appearances do not define base-game progression.

Recover from death without repeating it

When permadeath removes a Responder, separate the lost layers. The character and individual accumulated progress were the direct stake. Account-wide state and persistent currencies operate on different scopes, but the exact post-loss interface should be the final reference for what remains.

Then identify the decision that created the loss. A late infection requires earlier communication or extraction. A failed objective may require a clearer carrier and defender split. A Nightmare wipe may mean the roster was advanced faster than the team’s map knowledge.

Use Responders to plan the roster and Infection to protect a run from preventable turning. Modes explains why Solo is useful for rehearsal but does not provide traditional progression. All progression guidance here is scoped to No More Room in Hell 2 AppID 292000 and Armageddon 1.0 as checked on August 16, 2026.
